In the first step, the prospective patient fills out a detailed health history that covers a number of topics used for diagnosis including topics such as diet, exercise, sleep habits, emotional state, pain, family medical history and medications, family dynamics, sexual history, and menstrual history for women. We also look at our patients – how they walk and hold themselves, the color of the face and lips, and the brightness of the eyes. Additional diagnostic tools include the shape, color and coating of the tongue, and also the force, feeling and shape of the pulse in each wrist.
Once we have the patient information, the diagnosis(es) can be made. Identifying the correct pattern(s) is important in determining the correct treatments for each patient’s complaint. More than one pattern may be present and require treatment. After determining the pattern(s), the appropriate acupuncture points are chosen.
